What's the difference between a registered dietitian and a nutrionist?

A registered dietitian (RD) or registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) is a credentialed practitioner who has, at least, completed a bachelor’s degree, a master's degree, a supervised practice program, the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s exam, and a state license. Both RD and RDN are protected titles, meaning only those who have completed the qualifications can use the titles. Nutritionist, however, is not a protected title, and anyone can claim it. There is no standardized training for nutritionists, and many nutritionist training programs are unregulated. Registered dietitians can provide preventative care and treat conditions like diabetes, eating disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, and many other medical conditions with medical nutrition therapy.

Are nutritionists covered by insurance?

Nutrition services are only covered by insurance if the nutritionist is a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). When you book through Fay, we guarantee all providers are board-certified RDs / RDNs and capable of accepting your insurance.

Are registered dietitians covered by insurance?

Most insurance providers are required by the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to cover registered dietitian services. You’ll have to confirm coverage with your individual plan provider, but major insurance companies like Aetna, Cigna, Anthem, United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, and Medicare (public healthcare) all offer coverage and/or reimbursement for nutrition services through RDs and RDNs.

How do I know if my insurance covers nutrition services?

Most people get their sessions for free when they book with me because I am part of a greater company called Fay who has partnerships with the major insurance companies. Without coverage, you could pay closer to $150 per session. To get more confidence about your coverage, you can check your price using this pricing tool.

What's the average co-pay if my insurance doesn't fully cover the cost?

95% of people who see their dietitian through Fay pay less than $15 per session. Seeing a nutritionist can cost up to $150 per session without insurance, but when you book through Fay, you're likely to pay far less.

How can I pay for Pay Out-of-Pocket services?

If you have funds in a HSA/FSA, you may use those funds towards these services. Otherwise, I accept credit card and bank transfers on this website. For recurring charges, they will be billed monthly on the numerical day in which you signed up for the program. For example, if you started the program on the 7th of the first month, you will be charged on the 7th in the following months until the program concludes.
